Ted·s Boot Shop was a dream borne of its 3 original founders, Fred Dumas, his wife Isabel, and Fred·s brother, Ted. At the time, Ted was fighting for his country at the height of World War II as a sailor in the United States Navy. The store·s business plan called for Ted to return home after his tour of duty had ended in 1942 and to assume his rightful position at what would become the longest running family shoe business in the northeastern United States.
Ted·s Boot Shop is a landmark shopping destination in the heart of downtown Northampton, Massachusetts. Visitors from all corners of the earth make their way to Northampton, and walk through our shiny glass doors to find a refreshing mix of good old-fashioned customer service coupled with the latest fashions in top quality footwear. We·re the oldest business on Main Street, and the only full service shoe store in the entire region.
But Ted Dumas never made it home. The bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 crushed any chance for a timely discharge, and Ted soon found himself in the middle of the battle that would eventually determine the fate of the Japanese in the Central Philippines - The Battle for the Leyte Gulf. During that battle, Ted was amid ship when a kamikaze pilot crashed into his battle station, killing Ted along with many of his fellow sailors.

To honor Ted·s memory, Fred and Isabel decided to name the store after him, and Ted·s Boot Shop was born. The store opened its doors to the public in 1946 in the town of Easthampton, Massachusetts, and quickly became the most successful store of its kind in the area. In 1964 the store relocated to 158 Main Street in Northampton, Massachusetts, where it remains to this day.
