South End Formaggio

South End Formaggio opened on Shawmut Ave in 1999. Throughout our little store we pack in fine produce (local and organic when possible), chocolates, wine, beer and various other dry goods. We make the best of what space we have on our 'wine wall' to present an ecclectic selection of wines that we feel reflect the true nature of the grape, region and traditions that go into making the wine. As a result, many of our wines are either organic or biodynamic.

South End  Formaggio

About Us
After years of setting the standard for fine imported foods in the Boston area, Ihsan and Valerie opened South End Formaggio in Boston’s historic South End in January 2000. The shop is smaller than our Cambridge store, but it has many of the wonderful products packed together into a welcoming neighborhood shop.
Together with our buyers at Formaggio Kitchen, we seek out the artisan products from all over the world. Our cheese and meat selection offers the fruits of these labors with many domestic cheeses from small producers from New England and further afield.
About Our Products
Welcome to South End Formaggio, a unique gourmet foods shop specializing in small production artisan cheeses and charcuterie, hand-made sweets, staples for your pantry, hard-to-find spices and salts, and gifts for food lovers everywhere.
Each product is hand-selected by our staff. From organic Tuscan fruit preserves to single-estate Provençal extra virgin olive oils, our shelves overflow with treasures you'll come to love and cherish as much as we do. Let us introduce you to some of the world's most wonderful foods and their artisan producers.
Cheese
Cheese Philosophy
Just like the other products on our shelves, our cheeses each tell a story of a place, a family, or a culture. But unlike the other products, our cheeses are very much alive.
In fact, our cheeses are more like a gang of playful children than you’d ever think. Each morning we clean them up, mending any bumps or bruises, and throughout the day we are discussing which cheeses are boisterous with ripe flavors or how a particular batch or wheel compares to a previous one.
We see our cheeses as a product of one day in the life of the farm and cheesemaker and strive to communicate that history to our customers.
Our selection is constantly changing as something new arrives at least once a week either from New England farms or from Europe. This ever changing nature of both our cheeses and our inventory is what keeps us so inspired and fascinated by the incredible, edible cheese.
Wine
Our wine philosophy is simple: we like tasty and unique wines from small producers.
Our store is small, so we carefully hand pick every wine on our shelves. We admire and support sustainable, organic and biodynamic producers* who believe in letting the personality of their grapes & land shine through. We strive to meet winemakers in person and whenever possible to visit their properties to gain a more complete idea of the winemaker’s philosophy, the terroir, the weather, and the local foods and cheeses.
We stock only small grower champagnes, made by producers who grow their own grapes. Help us support growers who believe that terroir counts in Champagne!!
We are proud to offer rare wines specially chosen to pair with our cheeses, such as organic Saussignac, biodynamic Banyuls and a selection of wines from the Jura and Savoie.
Our Kitchen
The kitchen at SEF prepares an array of fresh foods daily, from sandwiches and soups to entrees, salads and sides. But did you know that they stock our shelves and freezer with other tempting options (made with the finest ingredients) that can make an effortless dinner or stock your pantry?
Catering
We offer bag lunches and sandwich platters for office meetings, cheese platters for receptions or hors d'oeuvres, entrees for a quick dinner party, and plenty of other selections for everything in between. If you don't see quite what you're looking for, give us a call at 617-350-6996 and we'll customize a menu just for you.
