The mission of Massachusetts Mental Health Center is to provide and ensure access to a network of effective, efficient and culturally sensitive clinical and rehabilitative services for DMH eligible clients with mental illness.
This mission is strengthened by academic affiliations with Harvard Medical School which provide MMHC the opportunity to train future practitioners, as well as to conduct in-depth research into the treatment and prevention of serious mental illness. The shared endeavors provide high quality therapies and innovative treatment approaches to all clients.
The Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC) was founded in 1912. From its inception, the institution was a hybrid of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS). MMHC's three-part mission includes treatment of mentally ill individuals, multi-disciplinary training of future practitioners, and research into the causes and treatment of serious mental illness However, the express purpose of the MMHC has always remained the same: compassionate care for all mentally ill individuals regardless of financial status.
Massachusetts Mental Helath Center is a large urban mental health center mandated by the Department of Mental Health to provide comprehensive mental health treatment and rehabilitation to all adults age 18 or older who live, work, or attend school within the MMHC Natural Service Area, and who meet the eligibility criteria as defined by DMH. Included within this Natural Service Area are the Boston neighborhoods of Brighton, Allston, Jamaica Plain, Brookline, Roslindale, parts of Roxbury and the Fenway, Hyde Park and West Roxbury. With an approximate population of 292,144 people, it is a culturally diverse population.
