Periodontal Associates
Dr. Cary Feuerman and Dr. Giovanni Castellucci graduated with high honors and received their D.M.D. degrees and specialty training in Periodontics from Boston University School of Dentistry. They are active in many professional organizations, and are both past presidents of the Metrowest Dental Study Club, an affiliate of the Massachusetts Dental Society. They have taught in the graduate periodontics clinic at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine, and continue to lecture on a local and international basis on a variety of topics including periodontics, esthetic periodontal therapy, dental implant treatment, and bone regeneration. They have many interests outside of dentistry, and both enjoy travel and spending time with their families and friends.
Periodontics
Periodontics involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gum disease by a general dentist or a periodontist. A periodontist is a dentist who has had additional years of specialized training in periodontics at a post-doctoral educational program and is certified as such.
Periodontal Disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, bone and ligaments that support the teeth and anchor them in the jaw. The bacteria are normal inhabitants of the mouth and form a film of dental plaque and calculus (tartar) which stick to the teeth. The bacteria produce poisonous toxins which stimulate the immune response to fight the infection. If the disease process is not stopped, the supporting structures of the teeth will continue to be destroyed. This eventually leads to tooth loss.
Dental Implant Therapy
Dental implant therapy has become the most ideal and conservative method of "permanently" replacing one or more missing teeth. This remarkable advancement in dental treatment significantly enhances the quality of life by restoring health, function and appearance.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a biocompatible screw-like titanium "fixture" that is surgically placed into the jawbone. After healing is complete and the implant is anchored in the bone, an implant post or abutment and permanent tooth can be attached in a variety of designs.
Bone Regeneration
Since the early 1990’s, dental clinicians and researchers have been able to predictably regenerate bone around natural teeth and on edentulous jaw ridges in association with implant reconstruction. This technical advancement, termed "Guided Bone Regeneration", has allowed millions of people to restore health to diseased teeth which would have been condemned to extraction in the past. In other cases, this remarkable therapy has given patients who have already lost teeth a second chance to enjoy the benefits of "permanent teeth" with the help of dental implant reconstruction. In all cases, patients experience an enhanced quality of life as a direct result of improved health, function and appearance.
