Boston Latin School

Boston Latin School is the oldest public school in America with a continuous existence. It was founded April 23, 1635 by the Town of Boston. The curriculum of the school is centered in the humanities, its founders sharing with the ancient Greeks the belief that the only good things are the goods of the soul.

Boston Latin School
Boston Latin School is an exam school of the Boston Public Schools.
The Examination Schools
We have three "examination schools" for grades 7-12 that admit students on a competitive basis. They are: Boston Latin Academy in Dorchester, Boston Latin School in the Longwood hospital area, and the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics & Science in the Madison Park complex, Roxbury. All three schools accept new students for grades 7 and 9. O'Bryant School also accepts new students for grade 10.
Students are admitted to the exam schools based on results of an entrance test and grade point average. Each accounts for 50% of a student's score. The grade point average is based on final marks in English and math from the previous school year (grade 5 or 7) and the first two marking periods of the current year.
Test registration materials for students applying for the next school year will be available in early September in all our middle schools, Family Resource Centers, branch libraries, and Boys & Girls Clubs.
History
Edmund Burke referred to America as exemplifying the "dissidence of dissent." From its beginning, Boston Latin School has taught its scholars dissent with responsibility and has persistently encouraged such dissent.
Establishment of the school was due in great measure to the influence of the Reverend John Cotton, who sought to create in the New World a school like the Free Grammar School of Boston, England, in which Latin and Greek were taught. The first classes were held in the home of the Master, Philemon Pormort .
Boston Latin School Classics Department Mission Statement
Education is a tradition of knowledge and a system of ideals applied in the conduct of a good life. A classical humanistic education teaches young people to think historically and critically for the purpose of reflective understanding. The Classics program at Boston Latin School uses the languages, literature, and art of ancient Greece and Rome to promote these classical ideals: to restrain one's impulse to self-interest, to live and treat others with dignity, and to participate responsibly in civic life. Through careful study of excellent thought, speech, and deed from this ancient world, our students will acquire the means to understand themselves and the human condition, make sense of the present, and conceive of a worthwhile future.

Student Council Mission Statement
The Boston Latin School Student Council is a proactive body dedicated to providing a forum for student concerns. It is an organization run by students whose priority is to oversee that the entire student body upholds values of the school.  Student council also serves as a place where dialogue between students and staff can take place so that problems can be solved by working in unison. During the weekly meetings, school issues will be addressed to inform members about current or upcoming events. Our affiliation with many regional school site councils gives members the opportunity to explore problems that go beyond the concerns of just our school. In addition, a wide variety of activities is organized in which all members can actively participate.
